I’m betting you have a party or some type of social gathering between now and the end of the year. Maybe more than one. I have a work luncheon potluck this week so I whipped up the “snack crack”. This addictive snack is somewhere between the traditional savory Chex Mix and the super sweet Muddie Buddies. I’ve made both and they are great. This has some savory aspects from the added nuts, with slightly sweet cereal from the brown sugar/butter combo and M&Ms thrown in. It’s a snap to put together. You can double or triple it. Get to it.
Combine the cereal with the nuts in a large bowl.
Melt the butter in a sauce pan and stir in the brown sugar and corn syrup. Stir constantly until the mixture comes together and starts to bubble.
Pour it over the cereal and nuts and combine until all the cereal and nuts are covered.
I divided between two pans sprayed with nonstick spray and baked the mixture for about 10-15 minutes until things start to smell amazing, Stir it around while it bakes to make sure the cereal doesn’t stick together.
Let it cool completely and then mix in the M&Ms.
Ingredients (for a single batch)
- 1 standard box of square corn cereal (like Corn Chex)
- 1 cup mixed nuts
- 1 stick butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 3 tlb. light corn syrup
- 11.4 ounce bag of M&Ms (I used plain, but you can use whatever)
Preheat the oven to 300 degrees.
Combine the cereal and the nuts in a large bowl.
Melt the butter, brown sugar and corn syrup in a saucepan and stir constantly until it bubbles. Take it off the heat and pour over the cereal and nuts. Stir well, until all the cereal is coated with the butter/sugar mixture.
Pour in a baking pan coated with cooking spray (I use two, so I can spread out the cereal. Bake about 10-15 minutes until cereal is toasty. Remove from the oven and cool completely before putting the M&Ms in the mix.
